Honesty by Billy Joel lyrics My Love Playlist

National Honesty Day | Honesty by Billy Joel

It’s National Honesty Day. Who knew there was even such a thing? And what better song to add to My Love Playlist than “Honesty” by Billy Joel? But honestly (get it? ha), it’s a great subject for me. When it came to being honest with myself I have really struggled with it because I was born a professional people pleaser. I always did what I was told. I wanted to make my dad happy, my teachers happy, my friends happy, my sisters happy. I just wanted everyone to be happy, which makes me good at my job. But in my personal life and in my relationships, all it made me was not authentic and not true to myself, and a little resentful, and it was all my doing!

I used to say things that didn’t match what I was really feeling because I didn’t want to cause any friction. I didn’t want to have an argument, I didn’t want any conflict, I didn’t want to be disagreeable. I wanted people to think I was a great mom and that I was successful; that I was perfectly balancing 50 plates as a single mother of two young kids, and I wanted it to seem like I really had my act together. Even though the truth was that, just like everyone else, I had good days and bad, and I was struggling to keep everything together just like everyone does!

When I was single, it really did seem like ‘everyone was so untrue’ like Billy says.

I realized that if you want to attract someone honest and trustworthy, you had to BE honest and trustworthy, even though it’s hard to tell the truth, I learned to practice doing it anyway. When I was single, it really did seem like “everyone was so untrue”, like Billy says. Trying to seem rich, fun, successful, trying to pretend they all had it together. But like always attracts like. If you’re attracting people with qualities you don’t want, you have to look in the mirror. I was attracting people who weren’t honest, that’s because I wasn’t being honest. It wasn’t until I really started being honest with myself and saying how I really felt that I attracted the real thing.

To find a partner I could trust, I also had to demonstrate authenticity

Honesty Billy Joel my love playlistIt wasn’t until I got real with myself and what I truly wanted that I attracted true love and found my soulmate. What I craved was to BE myself. What I craved was to be with someone who allowed me to feel like I could just be myself. I wanted someone to love me in my pajamas watching a movie on the couch. No makeup, sweaty from the gym, eating a pint of ice cream and going vegan the next day, or puffy-eyed in the morning, or accidentally hungover, and just being okay with that and finding someone who would be just as okay with it all, from my flaws and nooks and crannies to my subtle imperfections.

So I had to be brave. I had to be honest. I had to tell the truth. I had to believe that my greatest desire (to attract an awesome husband) was put in my heart because that’s what was intended for ME, and in order to attract the REAL DEAL, I had to get REAL with myself.

I had to be honest. I had to tell the truth.

“Honesty” by Billy Joel just over 40 years ago, in 1978, and the lyrics are timeless. Read it. Really take it in, every word. Are you being honest with yourself? Are you telling the truth about how you feel and what you really like and don’t like? Try it! Practice! You’ll get better and better, and realize that the whole world didn’t come tumbling down. I still work on it. I’m still a work in progress, but every time I speak the truth, I feel much better.

Honesty by Billy Joel

If you search for tenderness it isn’t hard to find.
You can have the love you need to live.
But if you look for truthfulness, you might just as well be blind.
It always seems to be so hard to give.

Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard, and mostly what I need from you.

I can always find someone to say they sympathize.
If I wear my heart out on my sleeve.
But I don’t want some pretty face to tell me pretty lies.
All I want is someone to believe.

Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard, and mostly what I need from you.

I can find a lover.
I can find a friend.
I can have security until the bitter end.
Anyone can comfort me with promises again.
I know, I know.

When I’m deep inside of me don’t be too concerned.
I won’t ask for nothin’ while I’m gone.
But when I want sincerity, tell me where else can I turn.
Because you’re the one that I depend upon.

Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard, and mostly what I need from you.

'Honesty' by Billy Joel from Mrs. Karen Stanley's Love Playlist
“Honesty” by Billy Joel is a timeless song.

When I went on my “last first date” with my husband, I told him things I’ve hardly ever told ANYONE. I just laid it all out there, and then guess what happened? He did the exact same thing. What freedom! Tell the truth and be loved for who you ARE, to be forgiven for what you have DONE in the past, and to be okay just being not OK together!

Honestly, if it’s possible for me, it’s possible for anyone to attract true love. I’m not okay, you’re not okay, and that’s totally OK! Let’s be not okay together!

And listen to Billy Joel at ALL TIMES!!!
