Fortress Around Your Heart by Sting — My Love Playlist

This prison now has become your home.

How could “Fortress Around Your Heart” NOT make it on My Love Playlist??? I went to see Sting instead of going to my senior prom. My sisters and I rented a car, drove to Dallas (which was five hours away), went to see the concert, and drove all night home… Well, they drove and I slept in the backseat! It was my first concert and SUCH an epic day!

Sting is one of the greatest writers this generation has seen, and this song was inspired by his divorce from his first wife. Imagine for a moment that you’re the narrator in this story—”Under the ruins of a walled city, Crumbling towers and beams of yellow lights.” You’re in a warzone of a relationship, stunned at the damage that was done, stopping out of fear that you’ll walk on the very mines you laid. You’ve realized that it’s time for the battle to end, for a bridge of resolution to be built, and the weapons of war to be burned.

No matter where you are on the relationship spectrum (in one, out of one, totally never want one ever again, wanting-to-want-one-eventually), I think we’ve all got healing and bridges to build. Build those bridges first and then “fill the chasm”. You have the power to stop the war and build a bridge new a new future. It may be a little scary “walking on the mine I made” but healing is an every day activity. One step at a time. Set those battlements on fire!

And let me set the battlements on fire.

Under the ruins of a walled city
Crumbling towers and beams of yellow lights
No flags of truce, no cries of pity
The siege guns have been pounding through the nights
It took a day to build the city
We walked through its streets in the afternoon
As I returned across the field’s I’d known
I recognized the walls that I’d once laid
Had to stop in my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I’d laid

And if I built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire
Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm
And let me set the battlements on fire

Away so long for years and years

Then I went off to fight some battle
That I’d invented inside my head
Away so long for years and years
You probably thought or even wished that I was dead
While the armies are all sleeping
Beneath the tattered flag we’d made
I had to stop my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I’d laid

And if I built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire
Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm
And let me set the battlements on fire

This prison has now become your home
A sentence you seem prepared to pay
It took a day to build the city
We walked through its streets in the afternoon

Let me set the battlements on fire.

As I returned across the lands I’d known
I recognized the fields where I’d once played
Had to stop in my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I’d laid

And if I built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire
Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm
And let me set the battlements on fire
