Don’t you want a partner who says ” I got you.”? I mean, it’s not grammatically correct, says my inner English teacher, but isn’t that what we all want? To love deeper and fly higher? I love that. I don’t think I knew what real love was until I met John. I wanted to love deeper, but I really didn’t know what that meant. Now, especially since he had open heart surgery 5 months ago, love means something different. Love isn’t romance. Love isn’t getting everything you want. I didn’t get my needs met, we didn’t have much romance, we didn’t go on trips and we didn’t have any fun. We got out of the house a few times and made the best of it. We tried to enjoy the outdoors (thank you GOD his surgery was in March when it’s gorgeous outside, and not 110 degrees like it is today. Every day felt like Groundhog Day…for weeks and weeks. He’s still not 100%. But he’s alive. I had that fear oozing into every thought…What if he dies? What am I going to do? It was terrifying.

But he’s still here. Loving deeper is caring for his heart. Literally. I would never have defined it that way before. His heart. It belongs to me. My job is to protect it as well as I can. Make sure he feels loved and cared for. Give him the compassion and empathy he never had. Especially when he’s sick and feels like shit. Loving and caring even when, especially when I don’t “get” anything in return. You know what I mean. I didn’t “get” the things that make relationships great. No hiking together, no biking together, no dates, no dancing. Just taking care of him. Just feeding and clothing and bossing him around making sure he took his pills and didn’t hurt himself more. (That’s a full time job even in normal circumstances.) Knowing that if anything happened to me, he would do the exact same thing. He protects my heart. He loves me the way I need to be loved. That’s what this song reminds me of now. Loving deeper. It is possible to attract someone who loves you deeper than anyone else ever has loved you before.
