My brother reminded me to tell the story about how I “fired” a dude when we were on a trip to California. And that reminded me of “Goodbye” by Kristinia DeBarge.

I don’t know why sh*t always seems to go down on my birthday. The amiga sola Cancun trip was over my birthday – I got dumped right before that. I was on a trip with my ex-husband on my 30th birthday and I didn’t even get a present. This trip to Cali was also my birthday weekend. Should have known it was doomed. I had been dating this teacher for a couple months?? Not too long. Maybe just a month. I don’t remember. I had a meeting north of Santa Barbara, and I loved to stay in Solvang. A super quaint all-Danish town where I’m the shortest person and I love it! Thought it would be fun to add a couple days onto the trip, have him come with me, meet my client, make a weekend out of it! He drops me off, goes back to the hotel, and I was going to call him when the meeting was over. Then he was going to come back and pick me up. But the meeting got done way early, and since the hotel was about 30 minutes away, my (happily married and long time friend of mine) client offered to give me a ride back, so said soon-to-be-fired-dude didn’t have to come get me.

I walk into the room and he’s seething. I can see that his blood was literally boiling, but I was so confused. I thought something horrible happened at home. Nope. He was about to have a mental breakdown because I was in the car with another man, a man who I have known for years, and is my friend and client and has been happily married for 25 years.

When he said “I can’t believe you would get in the car and ride home with another man when you were supposed to call me and I was supposed to pick you up.” I wasn’t even sure what I was hearing. Wait, what? That is what’s making you so angry? I’m so confused. Except for one thing – there’s no way this is going to work out. What are you going to do the next time I have a business trip and visit another male client? Are you going to need a mental hospital? So I called my client, let him know that we “weren’t feeling well” and couldn’t make it to dinner that night. And I told dude he had to go. And kicked him out of the room. He had to go get his own hotel room and book a flight home for the morning. I was going home in a couple days, I had more male clients to meet with. So really, I was doing him a favor.

That night I walked to my favorite restaurant in Solvang and had a wonderful dinner solo. And slept like a baby.

You can’t waste time ladies. As soon as you know that it’s not going to work out, say goodbye. Wish him the best. Don’t waste any precious time.

He came by in the morning but I was so done. He said “but I scheduled you a massage.” and I replied, “I know! and thank you, it’s time for me to get to the spa so goodbye.”
